Take your DIY waste to your local recycling centre as free allowances introduced

Changes to Norfolk County Council DIY Waste Disposal Policy at Recycling Centres

Since 2018, a fully chargeable service for all DIY waste has been in place at recycling centres. Prices vary between materials and are set to cover transport and processing costs of each material.

From 31 December 2023 this was amended to allow householders the following free allowances.

  • up to a maximum of 2 x 50 litre sacks (100 litres) or one single item per visit such as bathtub or shower door. There is a maximum size of 200cm x 75cm x 70cm for this item.

  • Make four single visits with DIY waste per household, in any four-week period.

Pay As You Throw Service

After the free allowances, householders will be able to dispose of additional DIY waste, but at a charge using the “Pay As You Throw Service”. The price per 100 litres (2 x 50 litre bags) or single item is calculated according to waste type:

  • Flat glass: £5

  • Unsorted/non-recyclable DIY waste: £6, e.g. roofing felt, plastic guttering, insulation, baths, soil, turf and other mixed DIY waste

  • Plasterboard: £12. A half-bag price of £6 (50 litres or equivalent) is available for small amounts of plasterboard. This material is difficult and expensive to dispose of correctly.

  • Rubble: £3.50

  • Timber: £3.50

There are no other changes to waste disposal or charging at the recycling centres. Further information can be found at www.norfolk.gov.uk/DIYwaste
